Six Papers
These 5-7 page papers will be developed from your interests, from readings, and from a list of topics that you will create during the first weeks of class. The final paper for the course is a reflective analysis of your writing during the semester and of yourself as a writer.

All of your writing in English 101 is public writing, and you should be aware that it will be read and responded to by other classmembers.

For each paper, you will include:

  • A Final Unit draft (5-7 pages)
  • Rough drafts or discovery writing,
  • A set of 2-3 questions written to class members about your paper,
  • Peer responses both to and from (approximately three) other class members,
  • A 1-2 page analytical reflection about your work on the paper.
  • Single Unit Submission Form (there are a bunch of these in the back of the course guide)
  • Single Unit Grading Standards sheet (also in the back of the Course Guide.)

A paper is not considered complete unless all of these items accompany it when it is turned in.

You are expected to make substantial changes between drafts of the same paper. It is expected that your revisions will include adding, deleting, and rearranging the content of your drafts. You will turn in Unit materials both by giving me a printed copy and saving the files electronically to your STV250 Instructor Folder.

Class Bulletin Board Postings
WebBoard will be our collective journal for the course. I will sometimes provide you with prompts or questions to discuss, but I will often encourage you to generate your own topics to share with each other. I also encourage you to share portions of your papers with each other on the bulletin board and respond to them.

You are required to submit at least 3 thoughtful post per week, but you may contribute more if you wish, and on some occasions I will assign additional posts. Your 3 posts may be responses to class discussions and readings, your own thoughts and reflections, or responses to posts written by other class members.

The purposes of the bulletin board are that you are 1) conversing with others, 2) thinking critically and reflectivly, 3) becoming more comfortable with writing and 4) familiarizing yourself with electronic communications technology.

Numerous Short Writings
These will usually range from a paragraph to a few pages in length and will focus on exploring ideas, reflecting on drafts, and responding to readings. These may be homework assignments, Posts to WebCT, or writings done during class.

Final Portfolio
Your grade for English 101 depends on sucessful completion of all parts of the required portfolio for the course. (See portfolio grading standards.)

These parts include:

  • Five completed papers and drafts
  • All questions/responses to and from peer group readers
  • All analytical writings (process writings) for each paper
  • The Baseline Writing Assessment essay and revision plan (I will collect this seperately from the portfolio, probably early in the semester, but it needs to be completed in order for the portfolio to be complete)
  • An analytical essay and its revisions (6th Paper)
  • A signed Portfolio Submission Form (last page of course guide)
  • All materials in the portfolio must be wordprocessed and turned in to my STV250 Instructor Folder. You do not need to turn a printed version of the portfolio.

The portfolio is an important document and constitutes the final course grade. Students must complete all the work for the course in a timely fashion if they expect to do well. Unexcused late work or falure to meet teh deadlines for the unit drafts constitues a failure to meet these requirements.

Advisory grades for each unit are advisory and are only an indication of how well the instructor thinks a student will do on the final portfolio based on the work completed for each individual paper. The final course grade is based on the portolfio only and is not an average of the advisory grades. The portfolio is graded as a complete document according to the English 101 grading standards, and the advisory grades, provided they are satisfactory, are not calculated into the final course grade in any way.

Class Workshops
Generally, there will be time each day for working on your papers. This is to be regarded as workshop time during which you should give and receive peer responses, discuss your work with me, or work on various aspects your papers. You are expected to use this time for writing and/or responding. This time may also include in-class writing and other activities as needed.
